New Delhi, July 21 Emphasising on job losses among the youth during the coronavirus pandemic, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), here on Tuesday, demanded reopening of gymnasiums.

"It will help increase immunity of people, and millions of youth who had become unemployed due to lockdown will get employment," said IYC national president Srinivas B.V.

When the lockdown had been lifted and economic activities were going on normally, it was beyond comprehension to keep gyms and gymnasiums closed, he said. The government should allow running of gyms with the social distancing guidelines.

The IYC leader said to prepare for sports, stay healthy and develop immunity, reopening of gymnasiums was necessary. "It will also help the nyouth get employment," he said.

He said many youths lost jobs due to unplanned lockdown and mismanagement of economy. According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) report in May, 2.7 crore youth aged 20-30 years lost jobs during the first phase of lockdown in April.
