BJP core group is likely to meet on Sunday to decide the response on Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's invitation to the party to form the government in the state, according to sources.

BJP will not respond to the Governor's invite immediately. BJP core group is likely to meet tomorrow and decide party's response on Governor's invite, the sources said.

This comes after the Governor asked caretaker Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis to "indicate the willingness and ability of his party to form the government in Maharashtra".

The move comes amid differences between allies BJP and Shiv Sena over power-sharing.

No party has staked claim to form the government in Maharashtra even a fortnight after the results were declared.

Sources said that the Governor has decided to explore the possibility of formation of the government.

The term of assembly ends today. The BJP remerged as the single-largest party in the assembly polls winning 105 seats while Shiv Sena won 56 seats.

Shiv Sena has insisted that the two parties had a '50-50' power-sharing agreement before the elections.

However, Fadnavis has said the Shiv Sena was not promised the chief minister's post for two-and-a-half years when the alliance was sealed before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
