Mamata Banerjee today won a key battle in her political career by defeating BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, her former close associate. The Bengal Chief Minister trailed Suvendu Adhikari in the early rounds of counting, which dimmed her party's euphoria at a spectacular election victory in Bengal. But finally, she scraped past him and managed a 1,200-vote lead to clinch a victory. Suvendu Adhikari's switch to the BJP in December led to mass defections that left Ms Banerjee without many of her loyal aides. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday congratulated Mamata Banerjee as TMC took the decisive lead over BJP in West Bengal assembly polls.

Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh took to social media to congratulate Mamata Banerjee on winning the polls in West Bengal. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, NCP chief Sharad Pawar also sent out congratulatory messages for Mamata on social media. Following up, Rajnath Singh tweeted, “Congratulations to the Chief Minister of West Bengal, @MamataOfficial Didi on her party’s victory in West Bengal assembly elections. My best wishes to her for her next tenure. "Meanwhile, Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman also congratulated Mamata on West Bengal poll win. MNS Chief also send his best wishes to Didi for her next term.
