GBS Outbreak in Pune: 20-Year-Old Baramati Student Diagnosed With Guillain-Barré Syndrome After Eating Pani Puri, Dies During Treatment
Pune, Maharashtra (February 19, 2025): A 20-year-old woman from Baramati has died due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Pune. The deceased has been identified as Kiran Rajendra Deshmukh.
Three weeks ago, Kiran, who was staying in Pune’s Sinhagad area, started experiencing health issues. After eating pani puri, she suffered from diarrhea and weakness. Her family brought her back to Baramati, where she was initially admitted to a local hospital. As her condition worsened, doctors advised shifting her to a private hospital in Pune. Further tests confirmed that she had GBS. Despite ongoing treatment for three weeks, she did not survive.
Kiran’s father is an auto-rickshaw driver. Considering their financial situation, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar arranged for her treatment at Navale Hospital in Pune. However, all efforts to save her failed.
Baramati Taluka Health Officer Dr. Manoj Khomne and Government Sub-District Hospital Superintendent Dr. Mahesh Jagatap confirmed that Kiran had contracted GBS in Pune.
