Thieves stole jewellery worth Rs 11 lakh from a passenger’s bag on the Indore-Daund Express while pretending to help him unload his luggage. Pune Railway Police caught the thief and recovered jewellery worth Rs 10.84 lakh. The police traced the thief after scanning 150 CCTV footages, and the stolen jewellery was returned to the couple at a special function.

Shirish Vitthalrao Shitole (73), a resident of Dewara, Madhya Pradesh, was travelling on the Indore-Daund Express on the afternoon of January 13. As he neared Pune Railway Station, four men took his bag, offering to help him with his luggage. After he got off the train, they returned the bag to him and left. Soon after, Shitole noticed that the chain of his trolley bag was open. When he checked inside, he found that the purse containing gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 11.28 lakh was missing. He immediately filed a complaint at Lohmarg Police Station.

As soon as the crime was reported, the investigation team carefully examined CCTV footage from about 150 locations. The movements of the suspects helped identify the accused. After obtaining their photos, police learned that the thief was in Ghorpadi. A team then went to Ghorpadi Railway Yard and arrested Sumitkumar Satvir Singh (30), a resident of Sultanpuri, Sunny Bazar Road, Delhi, originally from Jatluhari, Taluka Bhavani Kheda, District Bhavani, Haryana. Stolen gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 10.83 lakh was recovered from him. After completing legal procedures, the jewellery was returned to the complainant.
