An 85-year-old woman in Maharashtra's Thane district tragically died by suicide on Friday, setting herself ablaze at her home in Ambernath township. Police report that Parvatibai Raghav Ahire, reportedly distressed with her life, used kerosene to ignite the flames. Her daughter-in-law discovered the scene upon returning home, finding Ahire's burnt body on the balcony. Doctors at a nearby hospital pronounced her dead on arrival. Authorities have registered a case of accidental death and sent the body for post-mortem. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the suicide are ongoing.
This incident follows a similar tragedy in Thane earlier this year, on March 2nd, where 61-year-old Sushma Vilas Khairnar died by hanging. Her death was allegedly due to mental harassment by her son and daughter-in-law. A 12-page suicide note, recovered from Khairnar's home, revealed a strained relationship with her son and daughter-in-law since their 2014 marriage. The note and a complaint filed by her daughter stated that she was restricted from moving freely and pressured to move to a senior citizen’s home. Following Khairnar's death, police registered charges of abetment to suicide, intentional insult, criminal intimidation, and common intention against the son and daughter-in-law.
