Thane, Maharashtra (April 5, 2025): A man who was released from prison in Kalyan has been arrested for committing another murder. The accused killed an elderly woman to steal money for his business. During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused entered the woman’s house under the pretext of asking for water, killed her, and stole her jewellry. The Kalyan police arrested the accused, identified as Chand aka Akbar Sheikh (30), who had previously been convicted in a murder case and was in prison. He was released a few months ago due to good behavior. After his release, he had been living with his family in the Ambivli area.

The accused needed money to start a momo-selling business, so he had been scouting the home of 74-year-old Ranjana Patkar. On March 20, he entered her house on the pretext of asking for water. He turned up the TV volume to mask any noise, then strangled the woman to death. The accused stole jewellry worth about Rs 1.05 lakh, including a mangalsutra and earrings.
Patkar's family had suspected someone else and informed the police. A suspect was taken into custody and presented in court, and he is currently in Kalyan Adharwadi jail. Meanwhile, the police gathered information from over 100 people in the area and kept a watch on local criminal activity. Based on a tip from an informant, the police identified the real culprit.
The stolen items have been recovered from the accused. Senior officers have praised the Kalyan Khadkpada police for solving the case, and the investigation into the murder and robbery is ongoing.
