In a proactive measure ahead of the monsoon, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has already pruned dangerous branches from 2,753 of the 6,367 trees identified across the city—completing 45% of the task. The drive, which began two months ahead of schedule this year, is being carried out with urgency to prevent accidents caused by falling branches or contact with power lines during heavy rains.
Under the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, the tree pruning is focused on key roads, footpaths, public spaces, schools, hospitals, parks, chowks, bus stops, and residential areas. “The operation is based on a technical survey across all wards, and the remaining work will be completed by the end of May,” said Tree Officer Rajesh Sonawane.
The ward-wise progress of the pruning campaign stands at: Majiwada-Manpada (60%), Mumbra (63%), Vartaknagar (48%), Kalwa (46%), Lokmanya-Savarkar Nagar (42%), Uthalsar (40%), Naupada-Kopri (35%), Wagle (35%), and Diva (24%).
To ensure maximum summer shade and preserve natural tree growth, only hazardous branches are being cut. The Tree Authority is also coordinating with former corporators and local representatives to identify and address specific spots in need of trimming. The green waste generated is being systematically processed into organic compost at TMC’s Kopri-based waste management facility.
