The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to invite Expressions of Interest (EOI) from developers for a 70-acre convention centre and viewing tower project at Kasarvadavali, near the Kharbao and Coastal Road junction. This mega project, which involves an investment worth crores, requires a well-planned financial model, making the selection of an appropriate structure crucial, according to Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao.

Given that Thane has never witnessed a project of this scale, TMC is carefully considering the planning, management, and maintenance aspects before moving forward. The EOI process aims to gauge developer interest and their proposed role in executing the project.

Commissioner Rao reviewed the project's blueprint on Thursday, which is being developed under the vision of MP Shrikant Shinde. Additionally, the meeting covered progress on other major civic projects, including the Kolset-Balkum Town Park, the redevelopment of Yashwant Rama Salvi swimming pool in Kalwa, and a new theatre in Kharegaon. Senior civic officials, including City Engineer Prashant Sonagra and Deputy Commissioner Shankar Patole, attended the review.

Experts have suggested two financial models for the convention centre: a public-private partnership (PPP) or direct developer-led construction. TMC aims to strike a balance between financial viability for developers and maximum benefit for the civic body.

Meanwhile, the ₹2,600 crore Kolset-Balkum Town Park project, which will feature a science centre, aquarium, fisheries heritage centre, planetarium, and commercial spaces, was also discussed. Commissioner Rao directed officials to finalize its financial feasibility and secure necessary approvals from the state government.

The redevelopment of Kalwa’s swimming pool is progressing, with hazardous structures already being demolished. The architectural plans are in progress and will be presented on Monday. Rao also instructed officials to expedite the reservation change process for necessary approvals.

Similarly, for the Kharegaon theatre project, land acquisition is underway, with 50% of the required space already in TMC’s possession. The remaining land is being secured through development plan reservations, with legal approvals sought. The theatre’s design plans are expected next week.
