Thane Water Cut: Ghodbunder Road, Kalwa, Mumbra and Other Areas to Face 12-Hour Water Supply Disruption on April 9; Details Inside

Thane Water Cut News: The Thane Municipal Corporation will carry out a planned water supply shutdown on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, due to a major pipeline leakage at Mankoli MBR. The shutdown will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. to facilitate repairs. During this period, unauthorized water connections along the main pipeline between Pise and the Temghar Water Treatment Plant will also be removed.

As a result, water supply will be suspended for 12 hours in several areas, including Ghodbunder Road, Lokmanya Nagar, Vartak Nagar, Saket, Rutupark, Jail, Gandhinagar, Rustomjee, Siddhachal, Indiranagar, Rupadevi, Srinagar, Samtanagar, Siddheshwar, Eternity, Johnson, Mumbra, and parts of Kalwa. Authorities have urged residents to use water cautiously and make necessary arrangements in advance.

In a separate development, the Mumbai Water Tanker Association has announced plans for an indefinite strike starting April 10 in protest of a Central Ground Water Authority order requiring mandatory licenses for groundwater extraction.

Association Secretary Rajesh Thakur said the licensing process imposes stringent conditions that make compliance nearly impossible. The group argues that the new rule will disrupt both business operations and key government infrastructure projects.

Spokesperson Ankur Sharma said tanker operators have started receiving notices from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ward offices and well owners. He highlighted concerns over one requirement that mandates 200 square meters of land around each well, along with the installation of a flow meter and a GPS tracking system. He questioned how such conditions could be met in a densely populated city like Mumbai.

Mumbai has over 1,800 water tankers that supply non-potable water from borewells and wells. Each tanker has a capacity of 10,000 liters, providing an estimated 200 million liters of non-potable water daily. Sharma said this supply is critical for small businesses and major government projects, including road concretization. He warned that the strike could significantly impact ongoing development work.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation previously issued similar notices in 2023, but enforcement was halted after intervention by the state government. According to officials, the licensing requirement was introduced in 2020 to prevent excessive groundwater extraction. Water tankers currently draw from 800 to 1,000 groundwater sources across the city.
