It was found by US Senator GaylordNelson during the 1960s. On this date, 20 million Americans ventured outdoors and protested in favor of a more eco-conscious society. Earth Day started out as more of a political movement, though today it has become a popular day for many communities to gather together and clean up litter, plant trees, or simply reflect on the beauty of nature. In recent years, Earth Day has grown to be celebrated globally in more than 193 countries. Environment and Energy Minister of Greece Kostis Hatzidakis has urged everyone to celebrate the special day by staying at home.
