West Indies seamer Ravi Rampaul will return to Derbyshire this year for the Royal London One-Day Cup, the club confirmed on Thursday (July 8). Rampaul was instrumental in Derbyshire reaching the Finals Day of the T20 Blast in 2019 as he picked 23 wickets - the most in the competition. Overall, he fetched 80 wickets in the 2019 season. The veteran couldn't return to the club the following year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though he hasn't featured for West Indies in more than five years, the 36-year-old exhibited good form in the 2021 Super50 Cup picking up 14 wickets for Trinidad and Tobago. This year, he will also turn up in the Caribbean Premier League after four years with Trinbago Knight Riders recruiting him."I loved my first spell with Derbyshire and I'm looking forward to getting started again in familiar surroundings," Rampaul said. "I know most of the players still, and there's a few new faces who are really exciting young players, if I can help them along in training and in games, I will do that, and hopefully we can get on a roll and challenge for the knockouts."Rampaul will also be available for the final three group games of the T20 Blast competition this year and is in line to play against Durham on Friday. "I've always felt that we had some unfinished business," head of cricket, Dave Houghton, said. "Ravi had such a good season in 2019, he was Club Player of the Year, but we lost him for a year due to the pandemic. It's great to have him back, Ravi is a great cricketer and he still has a lot to offer our side. He will be a great asset for us. "When I arrived in 2019, the first thing I said to him was that I wanted him to lead our attack. That means standing at mid-on and talking to our bowlers about what they are doing. It's a job he enjoyed and I think it inspired him to reach the heights that he did in 2019, and I'm sure it's something he's looking forward to doing again with our young attack in the One-Day Cup." Derbyshire are bottom of the Blast's North Group with three games to spare, and will need to win all three to have a chance of qualifying.
